The Proteas make history.

🏏 LONG ROAD TO VICTORY: Proteas Conquer Australia to Claim World Test Championship Glory

Simon Molekwa — On a day that will be etched in South African cricket folklore forever, the Proteas held their nerve and carved their names into the history books — clinching the ICC World Test Championship mace with a five-wicket win over mighty Australia.

It was raw. It was rugged. It was unforgettable.

At the iconic Lord’s Cricket Ground — the so-called “Home of Cricket” — South Africa pulled off their second-highest successful run chase at the venue. And they did it with grit, heart, and just enough flair to silence the ghosts of heartbreaks past.

Chasing History, One Run at a Time

Set 282 for victory, South Africa didn’t make it look easy. In fact, it was anything but. There were moments when the dream looked like it might slip — yet again — through Protea fingers. But this time, destiny had a different script.

Aiden Markram, calm as ever, played one of the finest innings of his career. His 136 off 207 balls was the rock upon which this historic chase was built. He batted with poise and purpose, carving out runs when every ball felt like a final exam.

Temba Bavuma added a hard-earned 66, anchoring the innings when wickets fell and nerves frayed. But it was Markram who truly lit up Lord’s — and just when it seemed he’d see it through to the end, he fell trying to finish in style. With only six runs needed, he launched a shot for glory — and was caught in the deep.

No celebrations from the Aussies. They knew it was already over.

One Final Push

With the crowd roaring and tension thick in the air, it came down to Kyle Verreynne and David Bedingham to cross the final frontier.

It took them 16 edge-of-your-seat deliveries to find those last six runs. Every shot was met with chants of â€śOlĂ©, OlĂ©, OlĂ©!” as Lord’s transformed into a sea of green and gold — Centurion transplanted into North London.

When Verreynne finally pierced the covers and sprinted through for the winning runs, the stadium erupted. Tears flowed. Embraces followed. History had been made.

Echoes of the Past, a New Dawn Ahead

This wasn’t just a win — it was redemption. For 1999’s dropped bat. For the rain-soaked exit in 2003. For the gut-punch of 2015 and the heartbreak of 2024.

This was for every Proteas fan who had dared to hope — and watched their hearts break time and time again.

Keshav Maharaj summed it up best as he fought back tears:

“Without this crowd, we wouldn’t be here. They lifted us. They carried us.”
