Pyramids FC became the champions of Africa for the first time.
In the first leg of the match, Walid El-Karti scored a late equalizer in the 94th minute at Loftus Versfeld, which changed the momentum of the tie. Going into the second leg on Sunday evening at the 30 June Stadium, the Egyptian team looked more dangerous than their opponents.
The stadium had a lively atmosphere, thanks to fans from other clubs around the country who came to support. This unexpected crowd made the game feel even more exciting.
The match became more entertaining in the second half. In the first half, the only major moment came from Fiston Mayele, who took advantage of a poor clearance by Grant Kekana and scored the opening goal past goalkeeper Ronwen Williams.
In the second half, Ahmed Samy scored with a diving header from a perfect free-kick by Mohamed Chibi, making it 2-0. At that point, it seemed like the team—founded two years after Sundowns won their first title in the same city—was on its way to making history.
However, the game got tense near the end when Iqraam Rayners scored for the visitors, making the score 3-2 overall. Just one more away goal could have given them the title.
Despite the pressure, the home team, guided by their animated coach Krunoslav Jurčić, held on and won. With this victory, Pyramids became the first team to win this continental competition before winning their own domestic league title.
