As Orlando Pirates prepare for their high-stakes European pre-season tour, the spotlight isn’t on who’s on the plane—but who’s missing from it. Monnapule Saleng, once the jewel of the Buccaneers’ attack, has been conspicuously absent for months. Now, as whispers of a sensational move to arch-rivals Kaizer Chiefs grow louder, one club legend has had enough of the drama.
What’s Going On with Saleng?
Since his last appearance on 7 December 2024 against Egyptian giants Al Ahly in the CAF Champions League, Saleng has vanished from Pirates’ matchday squads. That’s 33 matches missed—not due to injury, but reportedly over a salary dispute.
This absence is particularly puzzling given Saleng’s stats. In just 13 appearances this past season, the 27-year-old winger delivered five goals and an assist. In 2022/23, he was electric—26 goal contributions, a match-winning goal in the MTN8 final, and a key assist in the Nedbank Cup final. So why has one of Pirates’ top performers been sitting on the sidelines?
Eugene Zwane Weighs In
Pirates legend and former defender Eugene Zwane didn’t hold back when asked about the Saleng saga. In his view, the issue boils down to professionalism and respect for the deal you sign.
“You sign a contract—whether it’s you or your agent—and once it’s agreed, that’s it,” Zwane said. “You can’t suddenly say, ‘Player X earns more than me and I’m playing better, so I want my deal changed’ mid-season.”
Zwane stressed that players have every right to ask for contract reviews—but the timing and the method matter.
“You can’t refuse to play just because you’re unhappy with your salary. That’s not how it works. Honour your deal, perform, and renegotiate when it’s time. That’s how you build a strong case.”
He wrapped it up with a pointed reminder:
“You signed that contract. You must honour it.”

What’s Next for Saleng and Pirates?
As Pirates gear up for their 2025–26 pre-season tour in Spain, the burning question is: Will Saleng be part of the squad?
Or could we witness one of the most dramatic transfers in recent PSL history—a switch to Soweto rivals Kaizer Chiefs?
Whatever happens next, one thing is clear: Monnapule Saleng’s future is hanging in the balance. And so is his relationship with the Buccaneers faithful.
